Wounded At Gettysburg. Cornelius J. Smith of the 42nd Pa. The 42nd Pa. were known as the “Pennsylvania Bucktails” and placed a deer tail on their hats. This grouping was obtained directly from the family of Smith. It includes his Spencer rifle, bayonet, war time photo and buck tail, letters, a postwar GAR hat, and a most interesting Confederate sharps cartridge box with lead finial. Smith reused this captured box as his own. Smith placed his 5th Crops Badge on the box. It was very common for Confederate soldiers to use Union equipment but very uncommon for Union soldiers to use Confederate equipment. According to Smith’s pension record he suffered hearing loss from an artillery shell that exploded next to him during the battle of Gettysburg.
