The Oberkommando der Wehrmacht (OKW), or Wehrmacht High Command, was The supreme military command for Nazi Germany during WWII. ย The OKW was created in 1938 and was responsible for overseeing the three branches of the Wehrmacht: the army (Heer), the air force (Luftwaffe), and the navy (Kriegsmarine). In theory, the OKW was Adolf Hitler’s military office, and was tasked with translating Hitler’s ideas into military orders. However, it’s believed that the OKW had little real control over the individual high commands of the armed forces. The OKW was active from February 4, 1938 to May 8, 1945.
