Original Gettysburg Address Abraham Lincoln David Wills Signed (Autographed) Bank Check Certified. The following item is an amazing piece of Gettysburg History. An original Gettysburg National Bank check signed by Gettysburg Lawyer David Wills. It was Wills who recommended the creation of Soldiers National Cemetery to Governor Andrew Curtin after The Battle of Gettysburg. Wills is also famous for being the one to invite President Lincoln to Gettysburg for the consecration of the cemetery. It was at Will’s Home in Gettysburg where Lincoln spent the night as a house guest of Wills. This check was made out in hand by Gettysburg Borough President David Kendlehart. Kendlehart was the first person to meet the Confederates in town at Gettysburg and to hear their demands. The check is from 1874 and is fully endorsed by David Wills on the reverse in dark period ink. Wills always signed most documents very heavily. This one is dark and very clear. Usually Will’s signatures tended to smear badly due to the ink excess. This one is a very nice signature and easily readable. Will’s signature are extremely scarce.
