Original Civil War Excavated Relic VMM (Volunteer Maine Militia) Box Plate Recovered At Balls Bluff, Virginia Certified. Original Civil War Excavated Relic VMM Box Plate Recovered At Balls Bluff Battlefield in Virginia Certified. These plates were patterned after the U.S. box plate, but were stamped VMM for Volunteer Militia of Maine, and are thought to have been issued to Maine’s ten volunteer infantry regiments raised in 1861. Maine issued two forms of the plate: one with a lead solder fill and one without.  A great dug plate For the collector who wants an authentic battlefield ground dug relic. A light brown and slightly green patina with some edge loss.  A rare plate from a very historical battlefield. This is an older recovered box plate. A very historic recovery location and a very rare plate.   Recovered what was then off National Park property and is 100% Legal and 100% authentic. Both of the two hooks are broken, in good/fair   relic condition (priced accordingly) .  This is one of the rarer Union state box plates from an old collection. VMM plates  are very difficult to find and only come from old collections.
