Original Civil War 1864 PATTERN .58 CALIBER INFANTRY LEATHER CARTRIDGE BOX Certified. A maker-marked, Civil War Federal accouterment is an original, late-war pattern leather cartridge box in fair condition. Often referred to as a pattern of July 1864, Type 2, this cartridge box features the letters โUSโ within a border. All stitching is strong and box retains its end pieces or โearsโ sewn to the inner flap as with Type 2 boxes. Exterior of this original cartridge box features a strong surface of black bridle leather in good condition. Entire surface leather is strong and has area of minor flaking on the reverse at the sling loops. Some creasing is visible on the outer flap at the hinge area. All else fine. The leather latch tab is torn and is secured with a straight line of stitching and a single rivet. it has a brass pear-shaped finial or knob at the bottom of the cartridge box. Both original black-japanned roller buckles are now gone on the box bottom. Backside of box has the two leather vertical belt loops that are stitched and riveted, along with the sling loops, all in good condition. Interior of box is excellent with strong inner flap, complete but stiff tool pouch and tab. Pouch shows some cracking and some flaking. This fairly well preserved, the sides have added clips to use perhaps as a dispatch case. Federal leather cartridge box of the late-war pattern is a classic Civil War artifact at a reasonable price. This box is 100% guaranteed to be authentic. A nice display piece. Complete Gettysburg museum of History documentation (COA) provided. Priced accordingly.
