Nice Original Civil War Model 1858 US Smooth Side Canteen Certified By The Gettysburg Museum Of History.  Civil War US issued smooth side canteen. This one is missing the cover and sling. Has part of  the stopper chain, which is typical of New York Depot canteens. The pewter spout is unmarked. All three loops for the sling are present. Has some light pitting and a nice smooth gray patina. This is a very good original example of the US M1858 canteen as supplied by makers to the NY Depot, a branch of the U.S. Quartermaster’s Office of Clothing and Equipment. A distinguishing feature of canteens passing through this depot was the use of a metal chain instead of simple string to retain the stopper starting in 1862. An excellent Civil War artifact at a reasonable price. This canteen is 100% guaranteed to be authentic, and unaltered . A fantastic  display piece. Complete museum documentation (COA) provided.
