2x (Two) VERY RARE Original Civil War EXPLOSIVE Bullets (Inert) Recovered At Chancellorsville Certified. 2x .58 caliber Gardiner explosive bullet. Samuel Gardiner received patent #40,468 on November 23, 1863 for his exploding bullet or โmusket shell.โย This bullet has several distinctive characteristics.ย It has a dark color because it was cast of pewter which was harder than lead and would fragment. On good specimens, โS. Gardiner Jr. Shell Patent Securedโ can be found in raised letters around the base.ย A fuse nozzle is visible in the cavity.ย This nozzle leads to a powder-filled copper vessel in the center of the bullet. There is one complete one and one broken one so you can see the copper cavitary inside makes a great display with a glass case (included) Recovered At Chancellorsville Certified.
